How to move topmenu to left sidebar in rwd theme?

0

I am creating my first custom theme based on the rwd theme. I want the topmenu navigation to appear vertically in the left sidebar (the layout is 2columns-left).

I tried to add this to my local.xml:

<default>
<reference name="header">
<action method="unsetChild"><name>topMenu</name></action>
</reference>

<reference name="left_first">
<action method="insert"><blockName>top.menu</blockName></action>
</reference>
</default>

It does move the menu, but problems appear:

  • when I hover over the category, the subcategories don't show up anymore

  • the responsivity is lost - on smaller screens this menu stays the same as on large screen and the hamburger icon shows up in the header and doesn't do anything

Anyone knows how to move the menu and keep all the functionalities?

Thanks!
